He is also a Clinical Adjunct Professor at Universidad de los Andes, teaching in both the School of Medicine (Anatomy) and the Department of Biomedical Engineering (Quantitative & Advanced Physiology).
Dr. Girón earned his medical degree and a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering from Universidad de los Andes, completed his general surgery training at Universidad del Rosario — serving as Chief Resident — and went on to a clinical fellowship in bariatric and metabolic surgery through the Universidad Autónoma de Baja California / Hospital CIBA / IFSO-LAC program. He has completed international observerships in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery at Cleveland Clinic Florida and Montefiore Medical Center.
A prolific researcher, he has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed publications spanning metabolic and bariatric surgery, minimally invasive techniques, and surgical outcomes, and has contributed to international collaborative studies published in The Lancet and Lancet Global Health. His dual background as a surgeon and biomedical engineer brings a distinctive, evidence-driven perspective to the Digest.
As Editor for Latin America, Dr. Girón will review and curate the Spanish-language edition of MBS Digest, bringing cutting-edge metabolic and bariatric surgery evidence to the Spanish-speaking surgical community.
Dr. Girón commented:
“I am enormously excited to join the MBS Digest editorial board as Editor for Latin America. Metabolic and bariatric surgery is advancing at a dizzying pace, and having cutting-edge scientific evidence synthesized and accessible in our own language is essential to continue raising surgical standards and patient care across our region. I hope to contribute to this bridge of knowledge and connect the Spanish-speaking bariatric community more closely.”
