The MBS Digest is proud to welcome Dr Teresa LaMasters to the editorial board as Editor of the Science of Obesity Metabolism. Dr. Teresa LaMasters received her medical degree from the University of South Dakota School of Medicine in 2001 and completed her General Surgery residency at the University of Kansas School of Medicine – Wichita in 2006. She went on to pursue fellowship training in Minimally Invasive Surgery with an emphasis in Bariatric and Robotic Surgery at Stanford University in
2007.

She was among the first surgeons recognized by the American Board of Surgery with aFocused Practice Designation in Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (DABS-FPMBS) and also earned Board Certification in Obesity Medicine (DABOM).

Over the past 18 years, Dr. LaMasters has performed more than 4,000 bariatric surgeries withexcellent outcomes. She was the Medical Director of Bariatric Surgery at UnityPoint Clinic Iowa Methodist Medical Center for 17 years. She now leads the Weight Loss & Wellness Center of
Iowa as Medical Director, providing both surgical and medical treatment of obesity, while also serving as Clinical Adjunct Associate Professor at the University of Iowa, where she teaches medical students and residents across multiple specialties.

Dr. LaMasters is the Past President (2022–2023) of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). She is a Past President of the Iowa State Chapter of ASMBS, Associate Editor of Surgery for Obesity and Related Diseases (SOARD), and an active leader within the American College of Surgeons’ MBSAQIP, where she serves as Co-Chair of the Standards and Verification Committee, Vice Chair of CMBS, and as a site surveyor and program coach.

A passionate advocate for quality improvement and comprehensive team-based care, Dr. LaMasters is recognized nationally and internationally as a sought-after speaker and expert in the surgical and medical management of obesity. She will be an great addition to our all-star panel of editors.
